Insulation Grants

Loft and cavity wall insulation is a cost-effective way of reducing heating bills. The cost of loft and cavity wall insulation is subsidised by the energy utility companies and in addition to this the Vale of White Horse District Council offers a grant of up to £100 to further reduce the cost. Those who are over the age of 70 or who are in receipt of certain benefits may be entitled to free loft insulation (restrictions apply).
Visit http://www.cocoonyourhome.co.uk/.

The Council works in conjunction with an insulation discount scheme Cocoon. Cocoon compare a number of insulation installers to find the best price for customers.Cocoon provide customers with a free and no obligation survey and the prices quoted by Cocoon include both the discount from the energy utility companies and the grant from the Council.

Library (Mobile)
(Wednesday: Week 2, Route 8)

A mobile library visits the village once a fortnight, on Wednesday mornings from 10:05 to 10:20. The bus parks at Barleycott Lane and seems to arrive very much on time. For more times and other information, click here and select "West" from the map or text link.
You can download or view the "2009 mobile library calendar" in pdf format  to determine Week 1 and Week 2 dates.

Local Newsletter

The South Hinksey Echo, edited by a team led by Linda Slater, is produced three times a year and circulated to every house in the Parish, either as a printed copy or by email.
Shinfo (South Hinksey Information Network) Shinfo is an email service which is available to organisations and individuals within the Parish. The list now runs to more than a hundred subscribers and the aim is to reach every household. Those who do not have a computer, or do not wish to receive email messages, can then be reached by printed messages through doors. Transport (Public)

Residents on the Hill have a choice of services going into Oxford along the Abingdon Road. There are request stops at the top and half way down the Hill in the Oxford direction. For buses to Abingdon and Wantage there are stops at the bottom of Hinksey Hill and round the corner to the left at the top of the Hill.

To Oxford
(via North Hinksey): Stagecoach Bus No. 31 and X31
Request stops at top and halfway down the Hill
Bagley Wood times (Mon-Fri) : 07:06 07:38 09:35 10:25 (then 25 past the hour) until 18:20 19:04
Return from St Aldate's bus stop
Mon-Fri: 06:25 07:00 07:28 08:05 08:55 (then at 25 and 55 past the hour) until 15:25 15:45 16:15 16:45 17:15 17:45 18:10 18:40 19:30

To Abingdon & Wantage
: Stagecoach Bus No. 31 and X31
Request stops at bottom and top of Hinksey Hill
Bagley Wood times (Mon-Fri): 08:08 09:33 (then at 33 past the hour) until 15:33 16:48 17:43 18:48 (subtract 4 minutes for request stops)
Return from Wantage Market Place and Abingdon Stratton Way. Times posted at stops.

For Village residents there is only one really local service

To Oxford (via North Hinksey): Bus number 44, run by Heyfordian Travel. There is a request stop on northbound side of A34 (over the bridge). The problem here is that the stop is very little used and if the driver fails to stop it is a long wait, or a longish walk to Hinksey Hill or Abingdon Road for another bus.
Times:7.43, 10.09 Mon-Fri
Return from outside County Hall in New Street. Mon-Fri 13.50, 15.00,16.30,17.50. This drops passengers at the top of the Village on the A34 and can be very useful.

To Abingdon and Boars Hill
: Bus number 44 from the stop on the south side of the A34

NOTE: There are plenty more services available from the Abingdon Road every few minutes. Walk or cycle across the Devil’s Backbone, over the railway bridge and through the park. All routes from this side of the road go into Oxford City Centre.
